Eczema... Discover Exactly What It Is

The goal of this article is to educate. So let's not waste time. Let's clear the air right off the rip. Eczemais not a disease it is a skin condition. The medical name for it is atopic dermatitis or atopic eczema. Eczema is more commonly seen in infants, and can affect them throughout their adult lives.

In Western Europe studies have shown that approximately 30% of all skin related visits to the doctor resulted in a diagnosis of atopic eczema. This skin condition knows no boundaries. It will attack men, women, children, and even those of various ethnic backgrounds. In a recent survey of doctors in Western Europe, North America and Australia it was discovered that the number of individuals being diagnosed has grown.

According to Scottish researchers children with severe eczema feel their quality of life is impaired to the same extent as those with other chronic illnesses. It is also a proven fact that young children who get atopic eczema tend to develop asthma months or even years later. In the medical field this in known as, "The Atopic March."

Although a lot has been discovered over the years about eczema there are still some things that we do not know such as the exact cause of this skin condition. Scientists best guess is that the condition results from a variety of factors including personal and family genetics, immune response and environmental factors. However stress and other emotional discord has been known to make eczema worse, there is no proof that it actually causes the condition.

Doctors have come to realize that if both parents have eczema or other disorders such as asthma or hey fever, chances are that their children will develop it. Approximately 75% of children with eczema also develop hay fever or asthma.

Do to the lack of medical advancement in this area, more and more individuals that are suffering from this skin condition have started seeking natural cures and home remedies.

It would be literally impossible for me to explain everything there is to know about eczema in one article. I do however hope you have found the information I have provided to be informative.

Eczema Patients Most At Risk For Dangerous Viral Infections

Eczema Patients Most At Risk For Dangerous Viral InfectionsPDFPrintE-mail
Sunday, 09 August 2009
Eczema patients at risk for serious viral infections have more severe disease, are more likely to be allergic to food and other allergens, and have a frequent history of staph infections, according to researchers at National Jewish Health and other institutions in the NIH-funded Atopic Dermatitis Vaccinia Network.

The findings, published June 22 in the online version of The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, could help identify people at risk for serious complications of smallpox vaccinations, and point to defects in the skin barrier and antimicrobial-protein production as possible causes for the increased susceptibility.

"Previous studies have suggested that eczema is not only becoming more prevalent, but that patients have increased susceptibility to disseminated viral infections," said senior author Donald Leung, MD, PhD, Edelstein Family Chair of Pediatric Allergy and Clinical Immunology at National Jewish Health. "Our study is the largest and first in the United States to carefully characterize eczema patients who have suffered widespread herpes simplex viral infections of their skin. It is also the first to report that these patients are more susceptible to staphylococcus and other infections of the skin and eye."

A subset of the estimated 6 million eczema patients in the United States are susceptible to widespread infections of their skin by herpes simplex and vaccinia viruses. The herpes simplex virus is common but only rarely causes disseminated skin infections that can spread to the eye and bloodstream sometimes leading to encephalitis and meningitis. The widespread herpes simplex skin infection is known as eczema herpeticum.

Vaccinia virus, which is used in smallpox vaccinations, can also cause a serious and life-threatening skin infections in a smaller subset of patients. People who have eczema or had it in the past are susceptible to this infection when they receive a smallpox vaccination. This situation could limit the ability of those people to safely receive vaccinations in case of a smallpox bioterrorism event.

The Atopic Dermatitis Vaccinia Network (ADVN) is an NIH-funded multi-center network charged with better understanding the susceptibility of eczema patients to the vaccinia infection and to search for ways to protect against it. Atopic dermatitis is another name for eczema, an allergic skin condition that causes itchy, inflamed and cracked skin.

The ADVN researchers believed that they might be able to identify eczema patients at high risk for these infections and to obtain clues about the mechanisms of susceptibility by studying a large cohort of patients who had suffered eczema herpeticum, the herpes simplex viral skin infections. They examined a wide variety of demographic, pathologic and biologic characteristics in 901 subjects, 138 of whom had suffered eczema herpeticum.

They found that eczema patients susceptible to herpes simplex infections had more severe disease, earlier age of disease onset, more frequent history of other allergic diseases such as food allergy, asthma and hay fever, more allergic biomarkers, and more frequent skin infections with other microbes.

"These characteristics associated with eczema herpeticum should help us identify young patients at greater risk for eczema herpeticum so that we can be more vigilant with them and better equipped to prevent this serious complication of eczema," said Dr. Leung.

The greater allergic disease and sensitization, as well as infection by other microbes, point to a potential mechanism for the increased susceptibility to viral skin infections. An emerging model of eczema highlights the importance of skin-barrier defects and a lack of antimicrobial proteins among eczema patients. The skin-barrier defect is believed to result in the greater allergic sensitization among eczema patients in general. The even higher allergic sensitization among EH patients suggests the skin-barrier defect is particularly acute in those patients.

The higher levels of infections with staphylococcus and other microbes suggests that EH patients may be particularly lacking in antimicrobial proteins.

Face Eczema – Simple Homemade Treatment That Works

Chances are you have tried every treatment known to man to get rid of theface eczemabefore finding this article. Well, look no further because you are about to discover an extremely effective homemade face eczema remedy that can be used by anyone. The best part is the methods that I am about to share with you are extremely simple to apply and most people have the ingredients needed at home already.

Grab a pen and paper and get ready to go shopping in your own kitchen. In most cases all your face eczema needs is a little tender love and care, and I’m going to show you exactly what you need to do to put together your very own remedy.

Method #1 – Grab a huge bowel and mix up some oatmeal. Obviously you don’t want the oatmeal to be hot, because you are going to apply it to your face like a mask. It is best to let the oatmeal cool so that it thickens a little.  Let the oatmeal sit until it begins to harden. This will reduce the inflammation of the skin and it will also cut back on itchiness and redness. The best part is it is extremely affordable.

Method #2 – This method is sure to give your itchy facial skin relief. You will want to clean your face thoroughly then gently rub virgin coconut oil on your face. Relax for approximately 10 minutes, and let the coconut oil go to work. You can relax a little longer if you like. Personally I like to put on some nice music or my ocean sounds on the iPod while I relax. The majority of times I fall asleep but that’s another article :-) Once you have relaxed for a little while using luke warm water and nothing else clean the skin and lather a moisturizer all over. I recommend that you use this method right before you go to bed.

Method #3 – You can use an Indian spice powder known as turmeric. You should be able to find this spice in just about any health food store. Add a little of the spice to your tea (which you should be drinking) or you can add a little bit of it to your food. I recommend that you start out by using a little of it at the first to see how your body reacts to it. You can also add a teaspoon of turmeric with a half cup of olive oil and add it to your bath for a nice soothing and skin conditioning affect. The olive oil will work as a natural moisturizer and the turmeric servers as an anti-inflammatory.

Method #4 – This is a simple and affective method that was shared with me by someone on twitter. I was amazed at the results that they had received from something so simple. You will need to pour some milk into a bowl filled with ice cubes. Let the milk sit for a few minutes to allow it to chill. Take some gauze pads and dip it into the milk and place it on the affected area on the face.  You should repeat this method two to three times a day.

There you have it four simple and affective methods that will have your face eczema healthy in no time. I do however recommend that you do not jump in feet first and try to use all four methods at the same time. Start off using one and see how it works. You can start out choosing any method that you like it really doesn’t matter.

You should also keep in mind that these methods will work on all types of eczema not just face eczema.

Face Eczema

Facial Eczema – What You Can Do To Rid Yourself Of It Forever

Eczema is often confused with dry skin. In reality it is a skin condition that stems from allergies from substances that are ingested, touched, or inhaled into the body. The body attempts to get rid of the toxins which causes the allergy to manifest as an itchy rash on the skin which if scratched will begin to weep and in some cases bleed.

Face Eczema - 3 Things That Can Heal Your Eczema Forever

It's common to see face eczema misdiagnosed with simple dry skin. Some people even refer to facial eczema as a disease. The truth is it's a skin condition that stems from allergies from substances that are ingested, touched, or inhaled. Your body tries to heal itself which results in an itchy rash which surfaces on the skin.

Below are a few tips I have put together to help you understand some common causes of face eczema and what you can do about it:

Touching Your Face - We don't think about how many things our hands come into contact with throughout the day. Some of those things may cause an irritation to your skin. This problem can be rectified by simply washing your hands or using a hand sanitizer often throughout your day.

Initially you may find it difficult to not touch your face throughout the day. Don't give up, keep trying and after a while it will become a habit. This is an important part of living with eczema and will take a lot of patience and practice.

Lack of Moisture In The Skin - This is the beginning of a chain reaction. The chain is as follows... Dry skin will lead to itching scratching which will end up breaking the skin. Once the skin has been breached (opened) you become susceptible to infections. Without realizing it your skin is constantly being exposed to the hazards of nature, which ultimately contributes to disturbing the natural balance of the skin. You should also be cautious of which moisturizers you choose to use.

Since the skin on the face is exposed more to environmental elements, which all contribute to drying and disturbing the balance of the skin. It is recommended that you use a dermatologically tested skin moisturizer, which does not contain any type of perfumes and parabens which are extremely harmful to your skin. I also recommend that you moisturize your skin at least once a day.

Understanding Your Eating Habits - Whatever we put into our bodies is directly responsible for our health and skin conditions. As a sufferer of face eczema we have to be extremely cautious of what foods we intake as well as being aware of the negative effects it can cause on the skin.

In most cases eczema sufferers already know which foods they are allergic to. However there are a few others that you need to be aware of as well. The foods that I am referring to are, heavily spiced foods, processed foods that contain an abundance of additives, preservatives, and foods which contain mono-sodium-glutamate and an excessive alcohol intake.

As far as your daily diet is concerned your goal should be to keep a balanced diet and to eat a healthy portion of fruits and vegetables. This diet consists of the required minerals and vitamins such as Vitamin C, which contain properties that aid the skin in the regeneration process.

Keep in mind that this article is only meant to give you a few quick tips that you can implement rapidly to start getting rid of the eczema on your face. There are several other things that you can do to rid yourself from the eczema not only on your face but the body as well.
